Love's Call

From the December 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I Kings 17:8-16

Her eyes were closed to good: a drop of oil,
A little meal, were left, and now she bent
To gather two small sticks for final fire.
Perhaps the ground was strewn with sticks, but she
Had let in, "Not enough!" This error pinched
Her whole perspective—dwindling sense of good
Right down to nought.

A voice called out, a cry
To rise and break her self-complacency.
Commanding her to use her present stock.
Unfearing, calm, with open heart.

She did—
And saw that drought, and loneliness, and lack
Were phantom fears, destroyed by knowing Love's
Unfoldment. Giving showed her more, and then
Continuing to give revealed enough
For all.

If anxious care keeps eyes cast down,
Right now, eternal Truth still calls to lift
Our sense from penury of fear to trust
In Love's unceasing flow of love to man.
Reflecting selfless, active loving, we
Shall see Love manifest. Then meal or oil
Appear, or what we now most need. We know
God's law is good—divine fulfillment, sure.
